You’d be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn’t, in some way, feel drawn toward art. Whatever form it may come in, art has a way of moving us beyond words. When it comes to the public at large, according to Americans for the Arts, a whopping 60 percent of Americans believe local government should fund the arts. All too often, however, there isn’t enough support financially or in spirit when it comes to art programs. There’s no way to understate just how necessary these programs are—we provide a few key reasons to support art programs.

There’s nothing more meaningful than fostering a community. However, it can be difficult to figure out exactly how to create that kinship organically. With the help of art, however, you can form this connection organically. Innately, art is a personal expression, and it allows us to better understand ourselves. As such, it stands to reason that art would allow us to better understand others, as well. Oftentimes, you’ll see the shiest students blossom over just a few weeks in an art class. This is all thanks to the unique ways in which art can bring us together.

Self-expression is difficult for anyone, but students have an especially hard time. Rather than having them bottle things up, art gives individuals a venue through which to express themselves. Through ceramic printing, for example, people can craft a long-lasting piece of art that is meaningful to them specifically. It encourages people to be honest and vulnerable with themselves, which creates a better understanding of the self.

Although many see it as a “hobby,” art is anything but. The skills an individual develops during an art program will assist them throughout their life in a myriad of ways. For those students that are extremely talented and have the passion, any discipline of art could become their life’s work. For those who love art but may not see it as their sole future profession, they’ll have also gained life skills to serve them in any profession. Art fosters innovation and an ability to think outside the box—two things that are essential to a fruitful and productive life.

Fosters a community
